People process fragrances on the right side of the brain, which is most linked to emotions. Via the olfactory nerves, fragrances also affect the limbic system, where emotions, memory and sexual responses are triggered. It's a direct link to the pituitary gland, where hormonal releases can cause body wide reactions. Several studies have shown that bad odors such as pollution and certain synthetic scents can provoke aggressive behavior.
